Celiac Disease

Celiac Disease is an immune reaction to gluten which results in damage to the small intestines and prevents them from absorbing all the necessary nutrients. This eventually will result in vitamin deficiencies which will cause health and growth problems.

You may not even experience any symptoms at all, but when you do, the symptoms are often general and quite common which makes it difficult to immediately associate them with Celiac Disease.

Symptoms can be diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, anemia, unexplained weight loss or weight gain, intestinal lymphoma, bowel cancer, lactose intolerance, dental problems, mouth ulcers, Osteopenia, osteoporosis, bone or joint pain, fatigue, weakness, lack of energy, infertility, irritability, depression, seizures, tingling or numbness in hands or feet, muscle cramps, skin rash migraines and in children it can cause delayed puberty.

Some of the above conditions are the result of Celiac Disease (CD) which has been gone unnoticed and untreated for a long time and although it is not clear what exactly causes this condition, there are some factors or illnesses which present a risk for developing CD.

You are at risk when someone in your family has CD, or when you have type 1 diabetes, a liver disease, an autoimmune thyroid disease, lupus, Addison’s Disease, Chronic Active Hepatitis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Turner Syndrome, Sjögren’s Syndrome, Raynaud’s Syndrome, Alopecia Areata, Scleroderma, Down Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Williams Syndrome, and can also occur after surgery, viral infections, severe emotional stress, pregnancy or childbirth.

If you have some of the above symptoms on a regular basis then it would be wise to see your doctor and ask if you may have Celiac Disease. The sooner it is detected and treated, the better off you are.

Don't hesitate either to lay all your questions, no matter what they are, before God. He may not always give you what you want, but He will liberally give you all you need and then some!

Psalm 116:1-2
I love the LORD, because He has heard My voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, Therefore I will call upon Him as long as I live."
